Crescendo

Product Description
The sequel to the New York Times Best selling phenomenon, Hush, Hush

Nora should have know her life was far from perfect. Despite starting a relationship with her guardian angel, Patch (who, title aside, can be described anything but angelic), and surviving an attempt on her life, things are not looking up. Patch is starting to pull away and Nora can’t figure out if it’s for her best interest or if his interest has shifted to her arch-enemy Marcie Millar. Not to mention that Nora is haunted by images of her father and she becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to him that night he left for Portland and never came home.

The farther Nora delves into the mystery of her father’s death, the more she comes to question if her Nephilim blood line has something to do with it as well as why she seems to be in danger more than the average girl. Since Patch isn’t answering her questions and seems to be standing in her way, she has to start finding the answers on her own. Relying too heavily on the fact that she has a guardian angel puts Nora at risk again and again. But can she really count on Patch or is he hiding secrets darker than she can even imagine?

I wanted to slap Patch, shake Nora silly, and throw the book all at once. I got angry, I was shocked, and I was sad. Becca Fitzpatrick really knows how to make you hate Patch and fall in love with him all over again.

I absolutely loved this book!! You should read the first book however, Hush, Hush, before you read this one. Both books are fantastic.

In “Hush, Hush” Nora met Patch, a fallen angel who could have killed her in order to regain his humanity, but didn’t. Now, he’s become Nora’s guardian angel and they’re a couple, but secrets and lies about the angels and Nephilim are coming between them, and Nora’s life may still be in danger.

I enjoyed this one much more than I expected. I seem to remember thinking “Hush, Hush” was just okay, because it seemed like not a lot happened action-wise, and I wasn’t fond of Patch, who basically spoke only in innuendos. But not only did I like Crescendo, it made me a Patch fan.

Patch really is the hero of this story. He may smirk and wear black, but this archangel-turned fallen angel-turned guardian angel is very brave and reliable. I want to say more about him, but almost anything else would be spoilery. Overall, though, Patch’s biggest virtue is the fact that he puts up with Nora, who is probably my least-favorite heroine in any novel I’ve read this year.

Early on, while everything is good between Patch and Nora, I can’t see any evidence that she really cares about him for himself–she’s physically interested in him and she depends on his solid presence to help comfort her, but I’m not sure that she wouldn’t feel the same about any other handsome guy who filled a void in her life. Then she decides that they need to prove their commitment to each other, and she tells Patch she loves him and gives him the ring her dad gave to her just before he was murdered. When Patch doesn’t say he loves her back, she’s half-wounded, half-furious. The trouble is, due to Patch’s special circumstances (it’s like angel probation), if he openly says he loves Nora, he’ll be sent to Hell. And yet she’s angry. Next, she gets suspicious of his dealings with Marcie Millar, her nemesis. She trusts him with her life, but doesn’t trust him with another girl, which seems like misplaced priorities.

The Nora problems continue throughout the book. She’s harsh with Patch, then she laments that he’s forgotten about her. She tells him on no uncertain terms to get out of her life, then breaks down when it seems like he might have taken her seriously. Just about everything I dislike in an MC, Nora does it. For me, it reaches its worst point when Patch tries to save her from danger and she says, “Quit acting like I’m a huge inconvenience! I never asked for your help!” (ARC pg 118). For context, she was putting herself in a risky situation just to see if Patch would come find her and worry about her, then she blames him for saving her from serious bodily harm, if not death. Like I said before, all this made me love Patch. He’s superhumanly patient and awesome, period.

The plot is nicely complicated, with a fight brewing between the fallen angels and their Nephilim hosts, a wealth of mystery surrounding Nora’s dad’s death, some new facts about Nora’s identity, betrayals, showdowns, and danger at almost every turn. It’s a good read with enough adrenaline to get your heart racing, and it has Patch as a hero. Even Nora can’t dampen the other great elements in Crescendo, and I’ll be picking up book three without a doubt.

I can’t even begin to describe how I feel about this book. Crescendo is a touching story that really makes you think. Nora is an extremely likable character and the plot is out of this world. The writing was fantastic and I can’t wait to see what Becca comes up with next. Five stars!
